Technically speaking, the human voice would be considered a reed instrument, given the vibrations of the vocal chords. My point is, just because someone can stand in front of a mike and blurt out a tune doesn't make them any more gifted in terms of being a musician than someone with moderate skills as a guitarist. I have a Master's Degree in Voice and I spent a Hell of a lot of time working on it. I can sing opera arias, but prefer jazz/blues for reasons of my own. My point there is that to sing Jazz/Blues effectively, it would help some people to know more about their voices and to actually take some lessons in phrasing, selling a line, and all the rest of what comes with being an effective vocalist, i.e. musician.

Now, I also play the piano, and spent a lot of time learning the required Bach two and three part inventions. It was hard as Hell, but I had to do it for the degrees. I don't have the talent for it even though I proved I could at least perform the necessary pieces. But the playing of same does not a musician make.

You don't need a degree to be a musician in my eyes. But you need to have some evidence that you understand and are capable of working your craft to the extent you understand something about the structure of music and specifically how it relates to your instrument of choice, be it voice, guitar, drums, sax, whatever. You need a clue.
