Making Space - Poem

It was during the days
When we took giant steps forward,
And then looked back
To see the path we had left behind.

Somehow that space had filled in
With embers, comets and honeydew!
And, fuzzy spots with colored lights all around.

We walked a little more briskly then.
But, the bigger our steps,
The more the rest filled in
And they began stepping on our heels,
Chasing ahead.

"Faster!" They told us.
"We want more space!"
So, we moved a little faster
As they shadowed us light years ahead,
Then waited around the corner
For us to appear.

There seemed to be no end to it
And we grew a little tired of the whole thing,
So, when nobody was looking,
We bolted!
Free at last!
We ran and ran, slipping and hiding
Laughing behind moons and stars in the galaxies
We had made.

But in all the frenzy,
We lost track of each other
And now that it was all there,
We had to go find the rest -
And our friends.

It took a long time!
We lost track of the others -
They had lost us too.
And we realized nobody was so free after all,
Were they?
