After reading several of the comments here I have to say, you don't know a hillbilly till you marry one. (hope my wife doesn't read this). And I have to agree that Blues is the root of all American music and what is labeled at "Country" has some of the most profound lyrics/poetry to ever be found in a song. I could go on and on about lyrics (being a Jethro Tull fan) but I'll refrain. I suppose I have to agree with Dennis, as hard as that is to admit. The greatest music is that which has a piece of the artist in it. From the first note or word you hear their heart. In that regard genre never matters. Ok, I've said my peace. And Dennis, I have your next line, "there's no playin when there's no song"....any thoughts?

hillbilly? hell, my dad used to say it ain't country if it's got drums...really...I do love lyrical content though a fan of great melody as well and classical arrangements. It all depends on my mood and my writing, well, depends on my mood:) one of the most wonderful and exciting things about the times we are living in and the digital age is that all types of music are being brought to life and I find that I can listen to music from almost any era and place. I have a hard time with "labels" so it's easier for me to recognize true artists, those who no matter the song, own it...like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Neil Young. You know who it is from the first moment they open their mouth to sing or from the first note you hear when it's played. labels can be useful in a generic sort of way to me, kinda like sun signs, hey babe, what's your sign (seems like most of the women I meet were all born around the same period of time...they're all "Stop" signs....ok enough of my ramblin' lunatic way of sayin' hey...or in a downhome countryfried state of mind...Hay...back to the barn now to sweep out the cigerette butts, wadded up pieces of paper, broken strings & picks from last nights writin' session. So far, all I've got is the hook "there's no tellin' when nobody's listenin;" anyone want to take the bait....?

Even back in the era of the grand ole opry, with lots tuning in from all over,
my mom and dad who also were known as big band favs with their support of
music never called country singers hillbillies. I know this is a term used alot,
but also it is used or was in other areas of the country like NY and the music
biz from my home state of California. There was a time when I was working in
the biz in California when I heard this term and found it offensive A good song
denotes no boundaries, and if you get into words or poetry Nothing beats a country song. Except maybe John Lennon and George Harrison also known
for their lyrics. Ever listen to a good blues song. Man I could go on and on about
my love of different types of music. I feel fortunate too that my parents never
stopped my listening to music as a teenager or dancing. Gee my dad used
to say, what's wrong with that dance, Hasn't anybody ever seen THE BLACK
BOTTOM, yep a dance he and mom did when they where young. OK off my
soap box and on to some more great things here.
Love ya all!

I for one grew up on what some term as hillbilly music.
I still remember my mother tuning in to the grand ole opry when I was a child in Dayton Ohio.
The music has evolved since then, and many so called country songs have crossed over to the pop era.
I must admit that I cannot stand Rap being called music.
We, each one of us, have a preference, and the music goes on.
It might be a dull world if there were only one type of music to listen to.
All of you writers and artists keep doing what you are doing, and bring us more to enjoy.

I must say that I agree with Judy Whiting. There are a great number of talented folks here. Most have something to offer. Most still have the creative spirit and passion.
I for one plan on doing what I do for another decade or two even if I am the only one who enjoys it.....

hi everyone. me and some of the others here have lots to share about our
involvement is this biz of music hope to hear from lots of you.
As far as Richard is concerned. It is not hillbilly music and we all are not
a bunch of ole folks. I am proud of my work here in NASHVILLE and in Los Angeles. Some say Country and Blues are the foundations of all music or
AMERICAN MUSIC .

My best

Screw Eons. I belonged to a "music" group that turned out to be a bunch of pickers and grinners all sitting around in rocking chairs, reminiscing about old guitars and playing awful old hillbilly music. It's their freedom, but it's not my style. I am not ready for the rocking chair set yet. That mentality grates on me.
