Playing What We Feel, Feeling What We Play

Think this one might be fun! all of us in the biz have a special memory of an artist or a song
or a movie that made us cross the line and want to be an entertainer. Do you remember yours?
how about telling us when where and what song.

For me, it was music class and I was the featured singer Scared to death, till I heard
patsy cline do "CRAZY" my first opening to country Music, as I was a big fan of ROCK
but also wrote words. Older brother and sister and parents that where all into MUSIC
so I trotted into class and told me music teacher I wanted to sing "CRAZY". my teacher
didn't laugh and said hey good for the strings department of our orchestra. so i did it that
nite and the rest is history.
love you all

I don't look back too often, but I do know that what Neil Young was doing back in the late 60's & early 70's got me started on my singing and songwriting journey. Neil and so many other fine artists of that era got me hooked, however it was a God given ability in me that emerged and here we are, in the present.

I guess we learn and grow, as all, I'm sure do know. It's a great trip being on the creative river while it flows.....GJ.

Thinking back, there were a number of things that brought me to want to perform.
My Mother was my greatest fan, and gave me the courage to try.
I grew up listening to country music, but I felt I did not have the voice for that genre. I have always been classified as a crooner, but I still try different styles of music.
I tried a couple of talent shows, but never had the stage presence to put it across.
Now, at my age, I look back and think of what might have been.
To show you how old I am It was Roy Acuff who got my interest.

It seems I was always singing something when I was young and my friends all told me I was going to grow up to be a singer but I can't really remember any song in particular.

I know the three that I always sang the most in my preteen years were "Blue, Navy Blue", "To know, know, know him" and "Playboy".

Years ago, when I was a just a "bald-faced boy" there was a radio station in New Brunswick, NJ that broadcast a weekly show called the "Midnight Muse" from midnight to 2:00 AM. I'd break the rules and sneak the radio into my room. They'd feature folk music and frequently have live guests perform. I think when I heard Tom Rush's interpretation of an old blues song, "The Panama Limited", I was hooked. I still think that is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Later, when things became more electric and the folk music world was in an uproar the Midnight Muse coined the term "folk-rock" and they started playing The Butterfield Blues Band and Dylan's "Highway 61".
I never looked back. If I had, I'd probably be a wildlife biologist.
Peace to you all.

Judy,
Thanks so much. The honor you speak of would be mine, I'm sure.
I'll definitely hit up your friend Garry.
I knew this was going to be a good day. In addition to all of this I picked up a gig for Friday at a place in Cocoa Beach (Whoo Hoo!), a new venue for me. Now, if only my friends from across town would show up with that air-conditioner they said they'd lend me. Mine broke. I like it hot but...really!
Peace.

Judy,
Oops! I guess I hit the wrong button. Your comment was duplicated. I'm still a bit of a barbarian when it comes to computers. I still find myself going: "Huh! What?" several times a day.

I really hate to admit the song that turned me on to music was "Music, Music, Music" by Theresa Brewer. I was very little and when Mom came back to the car after picking up gawd knows what, I was hitting the dashboard of the car and singing that song. That was my first musical compliment and being the ham I am was hooked. I was 3 at the time.

Hi Judy. It was in church at a Christmas Party I think I was five. At that time Nat King Cole sang the The Christmas Song, by Mel Torme' I think when I heard that song the melody and clearness of Nat's voice I was hooked on becoming a singer. You could understand every word that Nat sang. Well it was at the Christmas Party that my sister and I sang, every one in the place just loved us. She was 6 at the time I was 5. I've been hooked every since. My dad played Lap steel & rhythm, Uncle Dick played a Martin, auntie played Uke and sang Uncle Art played Steel. So I grew up singing, every weekend there was music.
So the answer is: The Christmas Song, I think about it today and know why it hooked me, it was the sound that was made with the arrangement and then the melody and words married liked a hand in the glove. Thanks for asking. Thanks for sharing Bobby

the stories keep coming in and I love all of them. the Christmas Song by Mel Torme who wrote it.
every one knows Thanks Bobby. I can still here the words, correct me if I am wrong, "sleigh bells
ring are you listening"

I too grew up with music all around me, and my older brother and sister used to talk about the
greats who used to come to our house in Chicago, and all those backstage passes my parents got
to attend shows. My sister is an attorney, my brother president of the bay area credit union. both
in california. me my parents had me in singing, dancing and acting, all the time, That is the reason
for the music biz, and being broke alot in tennessee. think there is a song there somewhere.
