I’m from a lovely town in central New Jersey called Metuchen (pronounced Me-TOUCH-en). The oldest house in Metuchen is the Ayers-Allen house which was built in 1740. It used to be a tavern which served British and American soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Over the years various families have lived there.

Oh yes, and it’s haunted.

There are said to be a few ghosts who have been seen in the house over the years; growing up I’d always heard that the ghost of a Revolutionary War soldier haunted the place. As a young age I’d heard the stories of the ghost. The house was near my school and although it looked like an ordinary house on the outside, it scared me to think what was on the inside!

When I was about 5 years old my mother took me trick-or-treating. I can remember wearing a Princess outfit – the cheap, store-bought kind with the flimsy outfit and plastic mask. It even had a plastic wand. We walked to various houses near my school. And then we got to the Ayers-Allen house, which at the time was owned by a woman named Mrs. King.

As my mother tried to lead me up the path to the front door, I refused to go because I thought that the ghost would answer the door! No matter what my mother said to me, I would NOT go near that house. So I stood out on the sidewalk while she walked up to the door for me. I was terrified – I was so scared that something spooky would burst out of the front door – and then I saw a lady answer the door (Mrs. King) and my mother said something to her and they both laughed. Looking back now I’m sure my mother told her why I wouldn’t go up to the door. I hope Mrs. King got a good laugh at my expense!

Mrs. King died some years ago and a new family lives there. And yes, apparently the house is still haunted. Boo!

My mom opened the door when I got there pick her up for the Halloween party...and she started laughing so hard at me she fell on her couch and laughed for a good 2 or 3 minutes. And I was laughing so hard I had tears.

My husband refused to sit with us. He was a party pooper and didn't dress up. We didn't win, because I was the agent for the band playing, but we sure had a lot of fun!

I was half man/half woman, and I was doing all kinds of silly things turning to the man side then the woman side. The singer was so tickled he couldn't sing. So they had a to play a few instrumenals ..LOL

Re-sending photo

OK, last one. This is that same 1968 Halloween night. This is Dobie Gray ("In Crowd", but several years before "Drift Away"), whom we were backing that night. Of course, the only thing that looks anything like Halloween is the girl in the back with the costume.

This is Halloween 1968. Our band, the Portraits, was at the Water Wheel in W. Covina and this my wife & me outside the club. I was actually facing backwards, wearing my shirt backwards and the mask on the back of my head.

I'm sure my photo is not a winner, but what the heck. It's our band playing at the Pink Carousel in Downey, Halloween 1965. We were called the Mojo Men but for that night we were the Hobo Men. The girl sitting on the B3 was a waitress, not a band member.
Maybe I'll send 1 or 2 more from another year.
