Whoa! So many ways to respond to your comment...
First - I'm glad I made your day.
Second - I'm sorry I ruined your day. Let's not get lost in nostalgia - makes one old. The "good old days" were not really that good - no worse than now but we tend to not recollect pain.
There was a different attitude about music then, however. Genres were being shattered then. Today we have TOO MANY genres. I know we players all have had the experience so many times before a performance when someone asks: "What kind of music do you play?" A hundred wise-ass retorts come to mind that I usually discard for the sake of civility. I usually say something like: "I dunno - just another schmuck with a guitar - ya' know?"
I'm old enough to remember the rise of FM rock radio - when DJs were huge music fans and experts and actually chose and played real recordings from the station library or their own collections. In NY, the legendary Murray the K would play sets of incredible diversity - The Beatles followed by Aretha, followed by Hendrix, followed by Otis, followed by Iron Butterfly, followed by the Doors, followed by Tim Hardin, followed by the Blues Project, followed by Butterfield, followed by Simon & Garfunkel, followed by Pink Floyd, followed by......, etc.
Similarly, I once saw a Fillmore East show that had Miles Davis, Steve Miller, and Neil Young with Crazy Horse ALL ON THE SAME BILL!! Bill Grahman was a genious!
Technology!! Tubes to transitors to chips. Analog given way to endless streams of zeros and ones - ribbons of data, webs and nets - are we rescued or caught?
One advantage - digital is liberating and democratic (I do like my Tascam 2488mkII). No longer does an artist have to prostrate him/her self before the alter of the music business lords.
The disadvantage: how does one get heard/noticed amid the cacaphony of www noise? 1,000s and 1,000s of legends of their own minds.
And my small voice - shhh, just listen, please.

You made and ruined my day Bob.
I went to Last FM and listened to Surrealistic Pillow by the Jefferson Airplane after reading your post. I had forgotten how good an album that was. So reliving that album made my day.
The diversity of the songs was also a pleasant rememberance. A reminder of a time when good music was good music. And by that I mean a good song wasn't genre based. People let the songs sing for themselves without labels.
Then I realised an album like that couldn't be released today. They were masters at using dynamic range and in todays world of 3db of dynamic range the heart and soul of many of their songs would be lost.
But it is nice to go back and revisit an old friend.

Yesterday, while wading around in the myspace swamp, I came across someone who had the Jefferson Airplane's version of "Wooden Ships" as one of their profile songs. I haven't heard that song in years - since I sold all my vinyl. This was also recorded by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. I think it was a collaboration by the 2 groups - I'll have to look that up.
A beautiful but sad story - post-atomic war scenario. I remember growing up in those days when the US and the USSR were aiming ICBMs at each other - overkill, mutually assured destruction. Easy to be fatalistic under that cloud of madness. Which reminds me of the one-hit-wonder Strawberry Alarm Clock song "Incense and Peppermints": "Who cares what things we choose, Little to win but nothin' to lose."

Over here! (Thanks for askin'!) I guess I've been busy dealing with stuff - the quest for gigs and other distractions - not much time for rumination.

Where are you Bob?
Bob "Stormcrow" Sanders Comment by Bob "Stormcrow" Sanders on June 25, 2009 at 8:58am
Sorry I haven't commented here in a while. I've been busy "rebuilding" my computer after a major crash. Aargh! Technology is like a run-away train! The servant has become the master!
Judy made a good point - Analog versus digital. Now anyone with a computer and an internet connection can be a Rock Star! Of course, all the "classic" stuff was recorded in analog. "Sargent Pepper" was reputedly recorded on a 4-track! The Doors "LA Women" on an 8-track!

Now, if I can make this cut & paste thing work, here's a little humor at Joe Cocker's expense....enjoy!

don't know if this pertains or not. In recording session here in
Nashville yesterday! But it was a real cool session and the Artist
wanted ANALOG! smiles on the faces of all the musicians. Yea we
all remembered! SO luckily this studio had both! The grooves
the sound on playbacks in the control room, these great musicians
remembering the feel of Analog! Awesome Bob! of course in the
mix it will go pro tools and digital. Was another title of psychedelic
ACID ROCK! I feel in love with Jim Morrison and he was after my time.
And yes still listen to him! Wanna discuss Joe Cocker or the song
PURPLE RAIN!
Wishing you the best
Judy
