Playing What We Feel, Feeling What We Play

Since I don't specialize in any particular genre of music, I would like opinions on this.

I know that in jazz, the ability to go from high to low and vice versa is very common but I'm not sure what I can do to better my blues style.

Please view this video and all of you blues singers or fans, please let me know if there is some special technique that I'm missing. I don't feel that it's bluesy enough. Thanks....Pixie

Pixie, That was great...
Don't know what you need, since I don't see anything missin'/
My personal technique is to take every word and syllable in the song, tear them down, and think of what I'd be feelin' when I said those words, what would take me there, and how I would react if it was really me, really now....
When I sang Damn Your Eyes, I'd be feelin like I wanted him to be damned and cast into hell forever, for takin my soul and trashin my heart, so, I'd be filled with emotion, anger and pain at the same time, and the worst feeling of all, helplessness, let it seep out of your voice and let the raw real emotions you'd hold back in front of anyone else, never want the world see,,,come out with every breath you take every sound you make and then no one will ever be able to sing it the same way you do... In blues you have to BE BLUE...... As I said I saw nothing missin', just maybe a bit extra you might add, in blues, the emotion is the song... By the way, I really like your voice....

Hello Pixie :)

Wow! You really do have a beautiful voice !
If ya really want it, here it is.
I think Terri is rite. I see this quite a bit in Blues.
I think that any improvement you could make, would be to put more heat wrenching emotion in it.
To me, thats the thing about Blues...
Its the same scale. Same notes... Its the "feel" that one can put into the music that sets it all apart.

The feel of it. Emotions...
I really like Terri's way of tearing every word down. I'm gonna try that myself!
Maybe just try to channel all the bad things into the song.

I do know that if one really don't "feel" like the song is theres, It wont be :)

I would like help with my vocals also. Can we work on this together?

Thanks :)

First, Nice voice and the song sounds great.

When I approach a song I do it from two sides. The first is to look into all the words and phrases and try to get at the core of the songs meaning. Then I filter it through how I would react. The meshing of the two hopefully makes for a unique rendition.

I agree also. I've always known that I can express happiness, love, and often sadness but anger is one emotion that I have a problem expressing.

Actually the emotion I was trying to express was defeat. In the solo when I'm kind of whispering "Damn, your eyes" it's kind of an "I'm weak", "I just give up".

I think I'll have to learn to show anger.

Thank you all for your comments and constructive criticism. It's appreciated...........Pixie

That was blues worthy to me. I liked it better than the original.

Pixie...

I have pondered, and thought about this question since you posted. Blues are very personal, you've got that feeling in Damn Your Eyes. If you listen to some of the older blues vocalists, say B. B. King. Find a copy of him singing, Thill Is Gone, or Everybody Wanna Know Why I Sing The Blues, and you will see the way the greats make the song "FEEL". I think it has something to do with the way they phrase. They sing behind the beat, if that makes sense to you. The main thing though is to really believe the song you are singing, if you have a point of reference to the emotion the writer had when he wrote it, you'll be fine.

I think your cut of this is very good, keep on singin'!!
